To get a better understanding how all of this works? [He comes closer to see which book it is.] Or perhaps you'd like to learn to do some yourself.

I'm just trying to get a better idea of what kinds of magic people here might be used to. We don't have anything like that in my world.

If that's the case, have to started with asking some of the more magically inclined here? Starting at just books is too broad for a practical understanding.

Everyone's got their own stuff going on, right? So I figured I'd just do the research on my own instead.

You mean besides the "stuff" that we're all dealing with as a whole? [Well, there's probably tons of interpersonal drama he hasn't heard because there's not enough people for street gossip.]

Yeah, the stuff we're dealing with. Which they're probably better off trying to study without dead weight like me asking for lessons.

Sometimes the value someone brings isn't expertise but a new perspective. Since we're all away from our homes, we can't entirely rely on what we already know.

I mean, sure, but I don't think a different perspective is going to be all that useful unless I've got at least a basic understanding to start with.

So tell me what part you're trying to understand.

[He's not an expert but he's read enough about elemental theory and ley lines and other such, in addition to the books here, that he can explain it.]

What are your most common, run-of-the-mill spells everyone expects to see?

The average human in Teyvat can't really cast spells. There are other species capable of it, but their preference and skill vary a lot so you can't unify them either.

But the base of all magical and alchemical reactions is in elemental energy, so anything from Vision holders, to Youkai, to potions relies on this.
